Of Mice and Men
In the story Of mice and men a lot of the characters had a dream that they wanted to achieve and get, and no matter how hard they planned even to the tiniest detail not everything always went as it was supposed to. This ties right in to the quote from Burns, “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft a-gley” which means that everything that is planned doesn't always go the way it is supposed to. George and Lennie had a dream to own their own little place with all the animals on the farm and Lennie would get to tend the rabbits, and it would be just the two of them. That didn’t go as planned when Candy decides to join in on the deal so it wasn’t just the two of them. Then after Lennie kills Curley's wife he has to be shot by his best friend to be put out of his misery, so he never got to be able to tend the rabbits. Curley's wife had a plan to be an Actress a real star, but that didn't go as planned either because she was tricked and she ended up marrying Curley. These are some of the reasons that the title of the story and the line from Burn’s poem go with the theme of the story.
All of the main characters are disabled except for Slim. Carlson has no heart in the story because he shoots candy’s dog without any problem or hesitation, his disability makes himself worse as a person. Candy has one of his hands gone, and he seems to be living life just fine without it. The Black guy was kicked in the back by a horse and he now is a hunchback, his disability doesn't prevent him from anything he just is lonely and he wants someone to talk to and to be treated normally. Curley’s Wife has no freedom she's supposed to stay in the house all day and only talk to Curley sometimes she sneaks out and tries to talk to other people, I think she tries to overcome her disability but it gives her a bad image. Lennie is mentally retarded and he needs George to be his caretaker but he has no idea what he is doing in life he just knows that he wants to tend the rabbits. George is disabled by the fact that he can’t show love to Lennie even though he knows he loves him he never tells him only at the end.
